Slime Puncture Repair Sealant

Whether it’s your bike, wheelchair or car tyres, getting a puncture can cause a lot of stress, worry and disruption to your day. As a wheelchair user who needs reliability but prefers the ride of inflated tyres, I wanted something to combat these, so decided to invest in some Slime Puncture Repair Sealant.

But does Slime really work? There was only one way to find out!

What is Slime Puncture Repair Sealant and How Does it Work?

Slime is a luminous green liquid (think, Ghostbusters) that can be inserted into tubed tyres, to assist in the quick repair of punctures. It uses Fibro-Seal Technology to seek out and seal holes up to 3mm in diameter. Effectively, it’s designed to stop a puncture from causing you problems.

How To Apply Slime Tyre Sealant

Slime Tyre Sealant comes in bottles of varying sizes, with nozzles that attach to the valve on your inner tube. You simply rotate the tyre so the valve is near the top, remove the valve core, inject the desired amount, then fully inflate the tyre. We found the instructions clear, and liked the information detailing how much to use depending on the size of your tyres. Mine are somewhere between a “wheelbarrow” and “stroller”, so I used an 8oz bottle in each (237ml), as per the instructions.

Top Tips For Using Slime Puncture Repair Sealant

Replace it every two years

As with most liquids, Slime has a “best before” date. They recommend replacing it at the two year mark, as after that it could begin to dry up, which would make it less effective in the event of a puncture.

Don’t stop rolling

If you hear the gut-wrenching sound of something piercing your bike or wheelchair tyres, continue to roll for at least a few more metres. This ensures that the Slime continues to rotate around the inner tube and helps it locate and seal the puncture.

Putting Slime Puncture Repair Sealant to The Test

While they make claims of being able to stop and seal punctures, in order to give you a full and accurate review, I needed to put it to the test myself. To do this, I drove my slime-filled tyres over two screws and two nails, resulting in four impressive punctures. In my front-right tyre, one screw and one nail remained lodged in, and in the front-left tyre they pierced in a quick in-out motion.

Amazingly, all four punctures had completely sealed up almost instantly, allowing me to continue on with my day.

Does Slime Tyre Sealant Work?

Yes! In my experience, it was instantly clear that Slime does what it says on the tin. Despite having just made four intentional puncture wounds, my tyres had remained inflated.

I was half expecting to wake up to two flat tyres the following morning, but to my surprise, they were still fully inflated. Originally, I was planning on changing them shortly after my experiment, but curiosity had me wondering just how long the Slime would hold up for. So, in the name of science, I continued my life as normal, taking my 180kg powerchair (with four punctures!) across a variety of terrains, to see how long it would last.

Remarkably, it wasn’t until three months later that the Slime gave up on me. While my front-left tyre showed no signs of deflation, the one with a screw and a nail still lodged in suddenly let out a long tshhhhh and went flat. After removing the sharp objects, it did appear to self-seal right back up, but I was ready to replace the tyres by this point.

The Pro’s and Con’s of Slime Tyre Sealant

Balder Finesse F380 powerchair

Pro’s

  • Relatively inexpensive

  • Easy to use

  • Provides reassurance

  • Lasts 2 years

Con’s

  • Can be messy if you get a puncture

  • Not guaranteed to work in 100% of circumstances

In Conclusion

From my personal experience, I will definitely be buying it again. Although it’s not guaranteed to seal punctures in 100% of circumstances, it did a fantastic job of handling the four I subjected it to, and that adds a level of confidence in going about my life, knowing that my plans won’t be halted by a flat tyre.

While I continued on my slime-filled tyres after getting punctures for the purpose of this review, it’s important to note that Slime Puncture Repair Sealant is not a permanent fix. I highly recommend you replace your inner tube as soon as possible upon discovering a puncture.

Its goal is to get you home safely without disrupting your day, and it did that, and more, for me!
