3-in-1 Rechargeable Bug Zapper, Torch and Lantern

There is nothing better than enjoying the outdoors on a warm summers evening, but no matter how careful we are, it’s inevitable that mosquitos and flies will find their way into our caravan. This was particularly an issue during our 2019 trip to Scotland, as not only are the little devils out in force up there, but they’re so tiny that despite keeping the fly screens shut they still managed to find their way in!

A solution was found when we purchased our RUNACC Portable Bug Zapper.

Features:

  • Long-lasting (8-16hrs) rechargeable lithium battery, with USB cable included

  • Hook to hang it up

  • Multiple uses - Bug zapper, torch, lantern, SOS light

  • Water resistent

  • Miniature brush to sweep out dead bugs

How Does it Work?

Using ultraviolet light, the bug zapper attracts mosquitos and other flying creepy crawlies into it. Then when they touch the metal coil, it gives them an electric shock.

Our thoughts

Having a long-lasting USB rechargeable battery and great reviews it ticked all our boxes, and has been an excellent choice for our travels so far.

We half expected it to make a small humming noise, or buzz when it caught a fly, like a larger household zapper would, but it is completely silent. At first, this made us wonder if it was actually working, but after seeing that it had caught lots of flies we realised it was just really quiet! Because of this, and the long battery life, we feel happy to leave it on all night long, and it even still has charge when we wake up in the morning.

We also find it useful that it can be plugged in and charging at the same time as we are using it.

Although the bug zapper function was our main reason for purchasing it, we like that it also has a built-in torch and lantern, which are both sufficiently bright. The fact that it also came with a mini brush to remove the dead files is really handy too. It does claim that you can rinse it under the tap, but we don’t like the sound of mixing water and electricity (and we’ve got much more adventuring to do yet!) so we’re happy just using the brush for now.

Note:

We have found that the bug zapper element is most effective with the caravan lights very dim or in complete darkness, so it’s not that much use during the day. We generally have it on in the corner of the caravan in the evening and leave it on during the night. Also, occasionally we will look inside and see a tiny fly crawling around on the electrical metal coil and wonder how on earth it’s immune to the shock when equal size flies (or larger) have already been zapped! But 9.5 times out of 10 it gets them straight away.

All things considered, would we buy one now knowing what we know having used it?

Yes!

Where can you buy a 3-in-1 bug zapper?

We brought this one from Amazon, where there are lots of different styles to choose from. It seems like they all use the same components as ours, so it might be a good idea to have a look around if you think you’d prefer something similar but different!

*Please note: There may be Amazon affiliate links within this article. It won’t cost you any extra, but should you choose to make a purchase after clicking a link then we’ll get a few pennies towards our next trip! All of our “Adventure Kit” write-ups express our honest opinions, but what works for us might not work for you, so please do shop around and make sure you’re getting the best item and value for money.
